Jackson attorney Gaines C. McCorquodale was appointed to the position of circuit judge for the First Judicial Circuit, Monday by Gov. Bob Riley, to fill the slot left open with the retirement of Judge Thomas “Tom” Baxter. “I am honored by Gov. Riley’s appointment and I appreciate the confidence that he has shown in me,” said McCorquodale.

Scammers use First US Bank name to target individuals

Scammers have apparently used First United Security Bank’s name to target the bank’s customers as well as non customers recently, accordingt to bank officials. “On Dec. 28, 2008, someone using a recording device and purporting to be a representative of First United Security Bank called numerous individuals and supposedly told them their debit card with FUSB had expired.
Grove Hill mayor plans busy work session Jan. 15

The Grove Hill Town Council held a short session Monday night but heard Mayor Jerry Newton detail a lengthy work session he has called for Jan. 15 to discuss a number of issues. Newton said the work session is needed because many of the items need plenty of time for discussion.

Deputy’s car misses stop sign, crashes into Grove Hill yard

Sheriff’s Deputy Wallace Smith crashed into the yard of Bob and Emily Chaney Friday night about 7:30. Smith was responding to a call in Toddtown and failed to stop at the Church Street intersection with DuBose Avenue and ran across DuBose wrecking in the Chaney’s yard.
Calvin Guy’s contributions to C’ville Beautification Committee remembered

The Coffeeville Beautification Committee held a memorial service for longtime member Calvin Guy Sunday afternoon at the Coffeeville Town Hall. Guy, a well-known taxidermist, died recently of burn injuries he suffered in an accident in November.
J. R. Morgan named new Assistant District Attorney

District Attorney Spence Walker recently appointed Jackson Attorney, J.R. Morgan as the Chief Assistant District Attorney for the First Judicial Circuit. Morgan is filling a vacancy created when Assistant DA Joe Thompson was appointed Choctaw County District Judge by Gov. Bob Riley.
Several Clarke Countians locked up in Marengo County after shooting spree

A number of Clarke Countians were locked up in Marengo County after residents in the Dixons Mills area reported shots being fired into occupied houses and automobiles. No one was reportedly hurt in the shootings but Marengo lawmen said it is a wonder.
Coffeeville Library gets toilet paper, TV, more

The new and fledgling Coffeeville Library had a good night before the Town Council Tuesday as requests for everything from cleaning supplies and toilet paper to shelving and a new flat screen TV for the facility, housed in the old Town Hall, were granted.

SGM King departs on third deployment to Iraq

SGM Dennis King, the son of Lorenzo and Ella King of Gosport, deployed to Iraq during the first week of January 2009 for a 12-month tour. This will be SGM King’s third combat tour since the beginning of the war. He deployed to Afghanistan twice, once in 2001 at the start of the war, and again in 2003 while serving with the l0th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, NY.
