Commissioners approve central fueling station for county vehicles

The Clarke County Commission Tuesday approv-ed the creation of a central fueling station for county vehicles despite opposition from the senior commissioner. The county approved the bid of $99,929 from Jordan Petroleum of Lineville for a 16,000 gallon fuel tank and canopy.

Thompson is new Choctaw judge

Assistant District Attorney Joe Thompson has left his office in the DA’s suite in the south wing of the Clarke County Courthouse and moved to the Choctaw County Courthouse in Butler. He’s gotten a promotion. Gov. Bob Riley named Thompson Choctaw County district judge Friday. Thompson succeeds Pedro Scurlock who Riley appointed to a circuit judgeship a few weeks ago.
Upgrades talked for Silver Creek park

Clarke County Commissioner Rhondel Rhone told fellow commissioners Monday that the U.S. Corps of Engineers wants to make improvements to the Silver Creek park area. The Corps wants the county’s support on the project but isn’t asking for money, Rhone said.
Coffeeville man severely burned in mishap

A Coffeeville man was severely burned early Tuesday morning when he reportedly mistakenly doused an outside fire with what he thought was diesel fuel but turned out instead to be gasoline. Calvin Guy is a well-known area taxidermist and was severely burned by the fire and explosion that resulted.
Swapping a shooting house for a 4-wheeler?

Bill Mathews ordered a shooting house from a man in Mobile. He wasn’t at his home south of Grove Hill when the house was delivered but he returned home to find it. But he also found a 4-wheeler gone. Clarke County deputies made a report and Investigator Ron Baggette inquired about who had delivered the shooting house and found out two young men had.
Democrat out early; holiday closings noted

The Clarke County Democrat is out a day early due to the Thanksgiving holiday this week. The newspaper office will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Christmas parades scheduled around county

It is that time again…time for the annual Christmas parades to kick off the holiday season. Here are the parades on tap in Clarke County. Fulton A Christmas parade will be held Saturday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. in Fulton. Line-up will begin at 1 p.m. at Spencer Chapel A.M.E. Church. Entry fee will be $5.
Rick Grant named VP of Boise’s Alabama operations

Boise Inc. has announced that Rick Grant has been appointed vice president, Alabama Operations, effective immediately. “This appointment recognizes the exceptional leadership Rick has shown since taking on the role of general manager at Jackson,” said Alexander Toeldte, President and CEO of Boise Inc.

Arrests booked through the Clarke County Jail during the week of Nov. 18-24 include: Corneil Demese Barney, 18, burglary, third degree, $7,500 bond, arrested by the Clarke County Sheriff’s Dept. Elitha Shenese Chapman, 27, domestic violence, third degree, $1,000 bond, arrested by the Clarke County Sheriff’s Dept.
NRCS taking EQIP applications from landowners

The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) is currently taking applications for its Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Alabama landowners, including limited resource, new and beginning farmers, who have resource concerns on pasture land, cropland, forest, or land used for wildlife, are encouraged to participate.
