Gov. Bob Riley has announced the special election dates for Senate District 22, which became vacant with the death of Senator Pat Lindsey earlier this month. The special election will be held to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the Senate term, which ends in November 2010.

Sammy Hutto frequently calls in the first report of purple martins in the area and he has done so again this year, reporting martin scouts at his Chance home Tuesday, Jan. 27. The martins are signs that spring is on the way. They used to arrive in early February but have been coming by late January for a few years now.
Clarke Countians see history made in D.C.

A bus load of Clarke Countians were in Washington, D. C. to see Barack Obama become the 44th president of the United States Jan. 21. Although the group was not able to get real close to the Capitol, where the oath was administered, they enjoyed the sights and sounds of the day on the Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue and being a part of the historic event.
Mobile teen on 4-wheeler dies in crash

A Mobile teen-ager was killed Sunday afternoon when his all-terrain vehicle collided with a vehicle on a dirt road in rural Clarke County, authorities said. Dillian Odom, 13, was killed, according to Alabama State Troopers. He was a seventh grader at Faith Academy in Mobile.
Overton named county engineer

Danny Overton was appointed Clarke County Engineer by the Clarke County Commission Tuesday. Overton has been assistant engineer and most recently interim engineer, since the retirement last month of Engineer Sam Noble. Overton is a native of Clarke County and resides in Antioch.

U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby will hold a meeting with constituents at the new Grove Hill Senior Citizen Center this Saturday, Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. At 8 o’clock that morning he will be in McIntosh, meeting with citizens at the McIntosh Town Hall.

Grand Jury returns 206 criminal indictments

The recent Clarke County Grand Jury returned 206 criminal indictments out of 268 cases presented. The 206 indictments included 170 felony cases and 38 misdemeanors. Eight cases were continued for further investigation or because witnesses were not available.
Health care needs being studied

The Southwest Ministerial Alliance Community Organization is studying the health care needs of people in southwest Alabama. The organization will hold a public listening meeting at Wilson Chapel AME in Grove Hill, Thursday, Feb. 5, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Retired county engineer recognized

Clarke County Commission Chairman Elma Averett presents retired County Engineer Sam Noble with a plaque of appreciation at a reception at the courthouse Tuesday. Noble retired at the end of the year. He served twice as county engineer— a four year tenure and the last for 11 years.
Bids let for Jax library expansion

The Jackson City Council voted, Tuesday, Jan. 27, to let bids for the $1.2 million planned expansion of White Smith Memorial Library. Representatives of the library board told council members they had raised approximately $350,000, the amount required by the city for the project. Once complete, the expansion will nearly double the size of the facility.
