County lays off 15 road workers

On the heels of layoff announcements at area sawmills and other industries, the Clarke County Commission announced Tuesday that it will cut its 36-person road and bridge department by 15 employees. The move, talked about for a long time now, will save the county approximately $625,000 in payroll expenses.
Jackson City Hall named for former Mayor Arrington

The Jackson City Council voted, Tuesday, to rename Jackson City Hall in honor of former Mayor James Arrington. Arrington, 76, who served as mayor for 20 years, from 1968 to 1988, has been battling cancer. City hall will be renamed the James E. Arrington City Hall Complex.

Truck driver tries to scam casinos using documents in Boise recycling trash

A truck driver who hauled waste paper to Boise’s recycling mill in Jackson found paper documents left in the truck trailer from several gambling casinos after the trailer was unloaded. The sensitive information sparked an idea to extort money from the casinos but it didn’t work.
County wants to keep all working

During its first meeting on the road at Jackson High School, the Clarke County Board of Education reported that despite 9 percent proration, it expects to not show a deficit for the close of the fiscal year Sept. 30. An amendment to the school system’s budget was approved by board members, setting the current reserve budget at $1,635,522.89.
County OKs contract to spend $10,220.63 a month on jail inmate health care

The Clarke County Commission Tuesday renewed a contract with Southern Health Partners for health services for inmates housed in the county jail. The new fee is $10,220.63 monthly and that represents a 3.5 percent increase over the previous year.
Man charged with burglary of cash and payroll check

On Feb. 17, deputies responded to a residence on Cunningham Road that appeared to have been burglarized. An estimated $3,800 was taken along with a payroll check for approximately $1,000. Deputy Patrick Champion learned that a Robert Bettis had been at the residence earlier that day in reference to a bulldog.
Walker Springs RR crossing will close for repairs one day next week

Clarke County Engineer Danny Overton said Tueday he had been notified by a Norfolk Southern Railroad representative that the highway crossing in Walker Springs would be closed either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week for repairs between 9 a,m. and noon.
Reopening for Coffeeville Library

The Coffeeville Public Library opened last fall but Saturday a reopening was held as new books and fixtures have been added to the facility located in the old Town Hall including a new flat screen TV, three computers and more. Law firm opens Grove Hill office

Lyons, Pipes and Cook’s held its grand opening Friday, Feb. 20 at 11:30 a.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony outside its office located at 128 Main Street, Suite B in Grove Hill. Lara Keahey, wife of Marc Keahey, State Representative will lead the new attorney’s office. A reception was held immediately following in the Laurie Carleton Park.

Change is good. The Jackson Relay for Life Committee has made some changes to the annual Jackson Relay in celebration of 25 years that Relay for Life teams across the nation have been raising funds to support finding a cure for all cancers.
