TORNADO HITS FULTON?

A sudden storm that many claim was a tornado hit Fulton last Thursday afternoon, downing trees and dumping a massive amount of rain that caused short-term flooding downtown. The official cause was “straight-line winds” but many of those who saw the storm and its destruction afterwards say it had to be a twister. Two members constituted a majority of the Clarke County Board of Education at a special meeting last Friday and rejected a recommendation from Superintendent of Education Woodie Pugh for principal of Jackson Middle School, sending the matter back to the superintendent to find an acceptable candidate.
Power plants to be built in McIntosh

The Rural Utilities Service (RUS) issued a Finding Of No Significant Impact (FONSI) last week, clearing the way for construction to begin on PowerSouth’s Plant McIntosh Units 4 and 5. The FONSI came after a year of studies, testing and permitting to ensure the new units would not harm or significantly alter the environment.

The Clarke County Emergency Management Office has taken over most of the basement, including the offices that formerly housed Extension Service’s offices. A big metal security door with an official seal marks what EMA Director Roy Waite calls the “EOC [Emergency Operations Center].” The door is locked and requires a special key card to get in or visitors to the public office have to ring the buzzer to be let in. Waite explained that some of the offices will be utilized as sleeping quarters for male and female personnel in the event of an emergency as required by state and federal agencies. The Clarke County Commission approved a three-year contract with the local Department of Public Health Tuesday to enforce participation in the solid waste program. The cost is $60,000 a year. At the same meeting, commissioners agreed to pay over $69,000 in uncollectible or bad debts for the solid waste program for a quarter.

Health Dept. conducts survey

The Alabama Department of Public Health is asking that families with children or youth complete an online survey concerning health and health care services.
