A higher tax on business phone lines and higher fees for dispatching services for county municipalities are measures the Clarke County Commission is considering to combat a deficit in the E-911 office’s 2009-2010 budget.

Elaine Beech easily defeated Ozelle Hubert Tuesday to win the Democratic nomination for Alabama House District 65. Beech polled 4,353 votes, or over 80 percent, to Hubert’s 1,071 in the special primary.

Clarke Soil & Water taking cost-share applications

The Clarke County Soil & Water Conservation District has begun accepting applications for the Alabama Resource Conservation Program to allocate costshare funds for Program Year 2010. Under the program, a Clarke County landowner can be reimbursed 75% of the costs associated with the installation of approved conservation practices up to $5,000.
T’ville refinancing $8 million bond issue

The Thomasville City Council took the first step toward refinancing an $8 million general obligation bond issue Monday night. The refinancing will be completed at a special meeting Sept. 21. The city is realizing $258,000 in savings by refinancing the 1998 bonds. The financing rate is being reduced from 4.74 percent to 3.72 percent.

Thomasville Mayor Sheldon Day was not at Monday’s city council meeting but left a written report. Councilman Gaines Smith presided as mayor pro tem. The report detailed Day’s and economic developer Dottie Gaston’s work with local retailers. Day wrote that family clothing retailers are being pursued.

Contracting out courthouse security would save greatly over current cost

At a recent budget hearing, Clarke County Commissioners discussed the possibility of contracting with a private company for courthouse security. Security for the courthouse costs $111,864 for three and a half employees. That includes salaries, insurance, retirement, workers’ comp and all other costs.

Alabama crash reports are now available for purchase online through a new Web-based service offered by the Alabama Department of Public Safety, according to Col. J. Christopher Murphy, director of Public Safety. Murphy said the new service provides a convenient option for individuals seeking to purchase crash reports and also increases efficiency for Public Safety.
Litter Awareness Week next week

Clarke County Sheriff Bobby Moore (right) and Clarke County Citizens Against Litter (CCCAL) committee member John Moseley remind citizens that littering is a crime. The Sheriff’s Department and CCCAL are teaming up for Litter Awareness Week, Sept. 20-26. Students attending schools in Clarke County will be given materials and information about stopping litter. Sheriff Moore pointed out that those caught littering could face up to $500 in fines and possible time in jail. “We and the Clarke County Citizens Against Litter take this crime very seriously,” he added.
